Afropop Queen and celebrated African Baddie, Yemi Alade has expressed her excitement over recording the African Cup of Nations 2024 theme song alongside some of Africa’s biggest music exports. It features Yemi Alade, legendary Ivorian group Magic System and Egyptian singer Mohamed Ramadan. The song was produced by French producer, Dany Synthe with the video released on Universal Music Africa.
A delighted Yemi spoke about her excitement working on the project and her hopes for African football.
She said, “ Honestly, it’s an honour to represent my continent and encourage healthy competition in a sport loved globally. It’s a dream come true for me to have created the official anthem for AFCON alongside African music royalties.”
Continuing on her hopes for African football especially for women, she said that, “I believe that the whole world will be watching their favorite countries at the AFCON supporting their national team. I also believe that this platform will be the spring board for many players career. I wish them the best and honestly can’t wait for female championships around the world to get the accolades they deserve. I believe it will happen very soon so, let’s all be part of history in the making, get involved everyone! Let’s support African football and travel to Ivory Coast to witness the games or just watch on your TV screen. Stay informed!”
She also spoke about how 2023 had been a good year for her music, Grammy nominations and all while also hinting that 2024 will be a year of surprises.
“2023 was a year of surprises; from Grammy nominations to creating the AFCON anthem and touring 40 countries on my Europe/USA ‘African baddie’ tour with my mother by my side. I also will be teasing with ‘Mamapiano’ to wrap the year, not forgetting participating in soundtrack creations of mainstream box office movies. 2024 is undoubtedly a promising year and I cannot wait to see and unveil more surprises, music and collaborations with the world.”
Africa’s biggest football competition will take place between January 13 and February 11 in Ivory Coast with top countries in the continent battling for the trophy. The official song for the 34th edition of the competition is titled ‘Akwaba’, which simply means ‘welcome’ in Baoule.
