WOAW Gallery is set to unveil a momentous presentation at the 2023 UNTITLED Art Fair in Miami Beach with a spotlight on Charlie Roberts‘ latest painting series. The exhibit, running from December 6-10 (VIP & Press Preview on December 5), will showcase Roberts’ insightful take on the essence of painting and its relationship with contemporary imagery.
Roberts reimagines the traditional theme of the kitchen, infusing it with narratives of creation, intimacy, and exploration within the realm of literature and art. Drawing inspiration from Peter Wtewael’s 17th-century painting “Kitchen Scene,” Roberts unveils a modern interpretation that challenges societal norms and perceptions.
His piece titled CR-30… 23-2(2023) depicts a familiar kitchen scene but takes a contemporary twist. A woman at the counter, a man engrossed in his laptop, and surreal elements bridging the ordinary and the extraordinary create a thought-provoking narrative. Referencing a screenshot from Stanley Kubrick’s film “Eyes Wide Shut,” the artwork juxtaposes the mundane with provocative intimacies, shedding light on today’s perceptions of sensuality and familiarity.
Roberts’ use of elongated and meticulously crafted figures invites viewers into a surreal realm, blurring the lines between familiarity and detachment. He suggests that desire finds expression in this imagined space, challenging conventional perceptions of our inhabited spaces and the unexplored.
Visit Booth C57 at the Untitled Art Fair to witness Roberts’ captivating exploration of the kitchen’s symbolic significance in the 21st century. Elsewhere in art, a major touring exhibition on Mickalene Thomas is coming to US and UK.
