HBO has released its first look trailer for its new series, Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty. The film is directed by Adam Mckay from The Big Short and Vice, and is based on Jeff Pearlman’s non-fiction book Showtime: Magic, Kareem, Riley, and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty of the 1980s.
The minute-and-a-half trailer begins with team owner Jerry Buss, played by John C. Reilly, saying, “there are two things in this world that make me believe in God: sex and basketball. I’m about to buy a team.” It then snaps to the 1979 NBA draft, in which the Lakers select Magic Johnson, played by Quincy Isaiah, who becomes the cornerstone of the Lakers dynasty. Other characters shown include Solomon Hughes as Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Jason Clarke as Jerry West, Sally Field as Jessie Buss, Hadley Robinson as Jeanie Buss, and Adrien Brody as Pat Riley.
The ’80s Lakers team were known as the “Showtime Lakers” for both their electrifying transition offense and their larger-than-life-on and off-court personalities. While viewing a club performance, Buss comments, “I don’t know why basketball can’t feel like that.” ”To me, Doctor Buss, it do,” Johnson responds.
The ten-episode series will debut on HBO Max in March 2022.
