Chronic pain is a debilitating condition that affects millions of people worldwide, interfering with their daily lives and overall well-being. While conventional treatments like pain medications and physical therapy are often recommended, many individuals are turning to alternative therapies like acupuncture in search of relief.
A few days ago researchers at the University of Illinois Chicago received a $3.12 million grant from the National Institutes of Health, USA to study whether acupuncture can alleviate chest pain caused by stable angina.
Several studies and trials over the years have pointed towards the alternative practice being a beneficial treatment for other conditions, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and constipation.
Let us delve into the world of acupuncture, exploring whether it can genuinely cure chronic pain, who may benefit from it, and its potential advantages.
What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese healing practice that involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body to stimulate energy flow or “qi.” Proponents of acupuncture believe that it can help alleviate pain, improve overall health, and restore balance in the body.
Who should do it?
According to Dr Shuchin Bajaj, founder-Director, Ujala Cygnus Group of Hospitals, acupuncture can be an option for people seeking alternative or complementary treatments for various health concerns, not just pain. “It may benefit those who are open to holistic approaches and have a low risk of complications from the procedure.”
Dr Sanjay Singh, general physician, Cygnus Laxmi Hospital, noted that it has shown promise in reducing chronic pain for some individuals. It is believed to work by stimulating the release of endorphins and affecting nerve signals. However, the effectiveness can vary from person to person, and more high-quality research is needed to establish its long-term benefits.”

It’s important to consult with a healthcare provider to determine if acupuncture is suitable for your specific case.
Can it cure chronic pain?
Dr Bajaj explained that while acupuncture has been used for centuries to alleviate pain, its scientific evidence is mixed. “Some studies suggest it can be beneficial for certain chronic pain conditions, but the results are inconsistent. It might be effective for some, but not a guaranteed solution for all.”
Acupuncture is often used as a complementary therapy alongside conventional medical treatments, Dr Singh said.

“It should not replace necessary medical interventions, especially for serious conditions. Combining acupuncture with other therapies may enhance overall well-being and symptom management,” he added.

What are some benefits and risks of acupuncture?
Acupuncture’s benefits can encompass pain relief, stress reduction, and improved overall well-being, according to Dr Bajaj.
Dr Singh said the risks are generally low but can include minor discomfort, bruising, or infection if not performed by a qualified practitioner. It can also cause needle pain, noted Dr Bajaj.
