White House Gives Government Agencies 30 Days to Delete TikTok

As China’s international relations continue to undergo stress, TikTok has come into the foray as a point of contention. The app — which is owned by Beijing-based tech company ByteDance — has faced thorough inspection and its safety has been met with skepticism. At the end of last year, it was announced that TikTok would be banned from all devices issued by the United States’ House of Representatives as its Chief Administrative Officer said that the app poses a “high risk due to a number of security issues.”

Now, it has been reported by Reuters that a deadline has been set for government agencies to delete TikTok. A 30 day window to purge the application from all federal devices has been declared as of yesterday. The news comes shortly after Canada announced a similar ban and two of the European Union’s biggest policy-making institutions banned TikTok from staff phones. While this effects a microscopic portion of the application’s US-based users, the House Committee on Foreign Affairs is scheduled to vote on a bill that would allow the President to ban TikTok from all US devices.

Moving forward, the social media landscape may see a significant shift depending on how each government decides to proceed. Stay tuned for more as this ongoing situation further develops.
