‘What We Wore’ Is Accepting Submissions for a New Book Centered Around Eyewear

Back in 2014, the popular blog, What We Wore, published a book chronicling the history of British fashion through imagery sourced by submissions from the public. The project was started as a way to showcase genuine accounts of why people wore what they did and what it meant for them.

The sequel title will focus specifically on eyewear as a jumping-off point to speak on the cultures that surround the accessory. Curated by author and photographer, Nina Manandhar, People’s Eyewear will be in conjunction with a new exhibition at Wellcome Collection titled, “In Plain Sight,” which explores the subjectivity surrounding perception and how we see and are seen by others.

In an interview with It’s Nice That, Manandhar states, “Eyewear has been an important element of youth style across the generations, but since I’ve been researching, I’ve discovered there isn’t a huge amount written about it from a personal perspective.”

The book aims to elicit these untold stories through personal accounts that highlight both everyday photos and professional shots. Unlike the first title, People’s Eyewear is currently accepting submissions from beyond the UK until the end of this month. You can submit via email, What We Wore’s website or tagging #Peopleseyewear via Instagram. “In Plain Sight” will go on view at Wellcome Collection in fall 2022.

In other art news, Phillips will present “1970s / GRAFFITI / TODAY.”
