DMITRY BIVOL is set to defend his WBA world light-heavyweight title for the eighth time this weekend against pound-for-pound king Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez. This fight has captured the imagination of the whole boxing world and Saturday night in Las Vegas promises to be a spectacular night of action, with the T-Mobile Arena taking centre stage on Cinco De Mayo weekend.
Canelo is the overriding favourite for this fight and it is clear to see why. Bivol is undefeated, but as a professional hasn’t yet faced the stern competition that Canelo has. The Mexican unified the whole super-middleweight division in 2021, as well as being a world champion at middleweight and super-welterweight. Not to mention sharing a ring with Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather.

Dmitry Bivol vs Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez fight analysis
When Cinco De Mayo comes around each year, you can bet your bottom dollar that you are in the midst of a Canelo Alvarez fight week. 2022 is no different as Dmitry Bivol defends his WBA world light-heavyweight crown against the pound-for-pound superstar that is Canelo.
This fight really is one of the most intriguing match-ups of the year. If you look back to a few weeks ago for Fury vs Whyte, it was a spectacular event but 99% of boxing fans could have told you that ‘The Gypsy King’ would win and more than likely via stoppage.
This time around however, despite the odds being similar in favour of Canelo as they were for Fury, it is very different. Canelo is 5″8 and is stepping up to 175-pounds. Dmitry Bivol is 6″0 and is a career light-heavyweight. The sheer size differentiation between the pair is mind-boggling.
Furthermore, Bivol is the champion, on a seven fight title defence streak as well as boasting an impeccable 19-0 record. Canelo is coming in off the back of a quite magnificent 2021, but the intrigue of this fight is all down to the size difference and whether Canelo has bitten off more than he can chew taking on one of the best light-heavyweights in the world.
Canelo is the heavy favourite and it is clear to see why. You just have to look at his resume to see why he is such a special fighter. However, the big caveat here is the size difference and whether or not Canelo can get comfortable against the bigger, stronger, more powerful and fresh Dmitry Bivol.

What belt is on the line?
Dmitry Bivol and Canelo Alvarez are battling it out for the WBA World Light-Heavyweight Title come May 7th.
Bivol won the belt back in 2017, when he knocked out Trent Broadhurst in just one round on 4th November. The Russian boxing king has made seven successful title defences since then and is looking to make another one this weekend against Canelo.
The 31-year-old has just one knockout victory since then against Sullivan Barrera back in march 2018, and since then has won six fights on the spin via unanimous decision.
Although this on paper is just another WBA world title defence for Bivol, everyone knows it is far more than that. He is up against the great Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, who is quite simply the hottest prospect in the world of boxing.
Canelo is stepping up from super-middleweight where he won all of the four major world championship belts, meanwhile Bivol has been a career 175-pounder who looks to be in the prime of his career right now and most definitely has the tools to beat Canelo if he gets his game plan right.
Who are the current belt holders?
Apart from Dmitry Bivol who currently holds the WBA belt, the remaining three world title belts are held between two men. The IBF & WBC world light-heavyweight champion is the undefeated, spiteful, number one in the division, Artur Beterbiev. The other belt, the WBO crown, is held by American Joe Smith Jr.
What makes the 175-pound division even more exciting is that the other two belt holders are set to face each other on 18th June. That means, that the winner of this weekend’s clash between Dmitry Bivol and Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez is potentially just one win away from a undisputed clash with the winner of next month’s light-heavyweight unification.
This all further emphasises how exciting the division is right now. You have one champion in Bivol facing the pound-for-pound king in Canelo Alvarez. Then just a month later, you have a unification clash between Beterbiev and Smith Jr for the remaining three belts in the 175-pound division.
Exciting times ahead for the light-heavyweight division, with some huge British names just a couple of fights away from challenging from word honours with the likes of Callum Smith, Joshua Buatsi, Anthony Yarde and Craig Richards.
Here is a list of the current recognised light-heavyweight champions:
- WBA Champion – Dmitry Bivol
- IBF Champion – Artur Beterbiev
- WBC Champion – Artur Beterbiev
- WBO Champion – Joe Smith Jr
