Following the debut of a short teaser in May, NEON has dropped off the official trailer for director Brett Morgen‘s Moonage Daydream, a forthcoming film chronicling the life and genius of the late David Bowie.

“Told through sublime, kaleidoscopic, never-before-seen footage, performances and music, Brett Morgen’s feature-length experiential cinematic odyssey explores David Bowie’s creative, musical and spiritual journey,” the official description reads. “The film is guided by David Bowie’s own narration.”

The film, which premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, marks the first movie project to be officially sanctioned by the late musician’s estate. Morgen, whose previous works include JaneKurt Cobain: Montage of Heck and The Kid Stays in the Picture, also wrote and produced the film.

In conversation with Rolling Stone, Morgen disclosed that it took him two full years to comb through all of the archival Bowie footage. Upon beginning work on Moonage Daydream, Morgen suffered a near-fatal heart attack, which put him at high risk during the COVID pandemic.

“I don’t mean to make light of any of this, but: Bowie was the best quarantine companion one could possibly have,” Morgen told the outlet.

“You know, I’m sitting here, two years removed from a heart attack, and I’ve moved into my office because I’m too freaked out to be around anyone. So I’m all alone trying to do this by myself … and yet I’m making a film on an artist whose stock in trade is how to be creative during periods of isolation,” he added. “It comes up in every phase, from Ziggy to Blackstar. I didn’t see anybody for the first few months of the pandemic, but I saw David’s face every day when I woke up to go to work. It was almost like it was meant to be a piece of pandemic art. That was the only way it could be finished.”

Moonage Daydream will premiere in theaters globally on Friday, September 16. Watch the official trailer above.

Elsewhere, Megan Thee Stallion has confirmed that her new album is officially finished.
