Tim Burton has unveiled his vision for Netflix’s live-action Addams Family spinoff show, Wednesday. Centered on the character of the same name, the comedy horror series chronicles Wednesday’s time as a high school student at the eerie Nevermore Academy.
Jenna Ortega stars in the lead role, while Catherine Zeta-Jones depicts her mother, Morticia. Additional members of the cast include Riki Lindhome, Jamie McShane, Hunter Doohan, Georgie Farmer, Moosa Mostafa and more.
Christina Ricci, who portrayed Wednesday in Barry Sonnenfeld’s 1991 Addams Family feature film, will also appear in the series, though her exact role has yet to be disclosed. She will reportedly play a new character, and not an older version of Wednesday.
The teaser opens with Wednesday confronting a group of bullies who have been tormenting her brother Pugsley (Isaac Ordonez) and enacting revenge by dropping live piranhas into the school’s swimming pool during water polo practice. After being expelled from the school, her eighth in five years, her parents decide to send her to Nevermore Academy.
“You will love Nevermore,” Wednesday’s father tells her. “It’s a magical place where I met your mother.”
Nevermore proves to be far from your average high school. At the Academy, Wednesday is challenged to “master her psychic powers, stop a monstrous killing spree of the town citizens, and solve the supernatural mystery that affected her family 25 years ago—all while navigating her new relationships,” the show’s logline describes.
