Rick and Morty celebrated 10 years of alien planets and adventures gone astray at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con – and what better way to commemorate the monumental milestone than with two new trailers? Following a 10-year retrospective on the cult-followed animated series, Adult Swim also previewed the forthcoming seventh season of the show and the first official look at Rick and Morty The Anime.
The anime spinoff, which was first announced last May, is written and directed by famed manga illustrator Takashi Sano – who previously joined the Schwifty Squad back in 2020 and 2021 to direct the “Rick and Morty vs. Genocider” and “Summer Meets God (Rick Meets Evil)” special episodes respectively.
Consisting of 10 episodes, Rick and Morty The Anime will appeal to Rick and Morty fans all over the globe, as Sano reveals in the prerecorded video that follows the two-minute first look (evocative of the show’s title sequence). Sano, a big fan of the show, wanted to compile all of his favorite aspects of the colorful, complex series. “What I’ve tried to accomplish in these ten episodes, is to compress down [my favorite parts] to extract their essence, and then add a unique Japanese twist,” Sano explains.
A release date for Rick and Morty The Anime (as well as the show’s seventh season) has yet to be announced, but Sano makes one thing especially clear in his video. “After all ten episodes, I think you’ll find yourself in a particular state of mind – and that state, I believe, best reflects the feelings that I get while watching Rick and Morty.”
