Beyoncé opened the show at the 2022 Oscars tonight. She performed her King Richard song “Be Alive.” True to the subject of the film, the performance took place at the Compton tennis courts where Venus and Serena Williams ran drills as children. The performance was introduced by Venus and Serena and featured an appearance from Beyoncé’s daughter Blue Ivy. Beyoncé was also joined by dancers and an orchestra in the same matching tennis ball green. Watch it happen below.
The song was nominated for Best Original Song, Beyoncé’s first Oscar nod. (Billie Eilish’s James Bond theme “No Time to Die” ultimately won.) Beyoncé and Eilish were nominated alongside Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Encanto song “Dos Oruguitas,” performed on the night by Sebastián Yatra. Van Morrison’s “Down to Joy” from Belfast and Reba McEntire’s “Somehow You Do” from Four Good Days were also nominated.
