Apple TV+ has finally dropped the official trailer for Steven Spielberg‘s new World War II pilot drama starring Austin Butler and Barry Keoghan.
The nine-part limited series is the follow up release to Band of Brothers and The Pacific and is slated to release in early January of next year. The aviation drama reunites Spielberg with Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman. In 2001, Goetzman produced the 2001 Band of Brothers and 2010’s The Pacific. Written by John Orloff, the limited series also sees big-name episode directors like Cary Joji Fukunaga, Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, Dee Rees and Tim Van Patten. The trailer gives audiences a glimpse at Butler and Keoghan’s characters taking to the sky as U.S. pilots. The pilots are assigned their roles as a part of a special group preparing to go “straight into Hitler’s territory.” The trailer teases an action-packed storyline with explosives, dogfights and plane crashes. Butler’s character Major Gale Cleven, can be heard saying at the end of the trailer, “We won’t go down without a fight.” The synopsis reads, “Portraying the psychological and emotional price paid by these young men as they helped destroy the horror of Hitler’s Third Reich, is at the heart of Masters of the Air. Regardless of individual fate, a toll was exacted on them all.”
Based on a true story and the novel of the same name by Donald L. Miller, the plot follows the 100th Bomb Group, also known as the “Bloody Hundredth.” In history, the “Bloody Hundredth” were known as airmen who conducted bomb raids over Nazi Germany in WWII in risky conditions. Other actors starring in the series include Callum Turner, Anthony Boyle, Nate Mann, Rafferty Law, Josiah Cross, Branden Cook and Ncuti Gatwa.
Masters of the Air premieres on Apple TV+ on January 26, 2023.
