Just yesterday, Arcade Fire were announced as a surprise addition to the 2022 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. The band took the stage at the Mojave Tent on Friday night; after briefly stopping the performance at the beginning to direct attention to a medical emergency in the crowd, Arcade Fire played tracks from their upcoming album WE as well as fan favorites “Neighborhood #3 (Power Out),” “Ready to Start,” “The Suburbs,” and “Wake Up.” Win Butler also thanked Pearl Jam, whose decision to boycott Ticketmaster in 1993 ultimately led to the creation of Coachella. A representative for Arcade Fire told Pitchfork that, for now, the band is scheduled to perform during only Coachella’s first weekend. The band is readying the release of the new album WE, which arrives May 6. The follow-up to 2017’s Everything Now was produced by Nigel Godrich, Win Butler, and Régine Chassagne. So far, Arcade Fire have shared lead single “The Lightning I, II,” along with a music video directed by Emily Kai Bock. Shortly after announcing WE, Will Butler revealed that he left the group after the recording of the new album.
