Thursday marked the start of a long weekend as the traditional Chinese holiday, Dragon Boat Festival, was celebrated. Arriving alongside the usual festivities such as the dragon boat races, which see teams of paddlers compete on elaborately decorated boats, were drone displays that could be found off the waterfront of Victoria Harbor in Hong Kong as well as in the neighboring city of Shenzhen.
In the country’s southern tech hub of Shenzhen, 1,500 synchronized drones lit up the night sky, forming various shapes including a stunning portrayal of a colossal flying dragon. The use of drone shows at music festivals and ceremonies has been increasingly common, serving as a novel and more environmentally-friendly alternative to fireworks. As the industry continues to grow exponentially, it was reported that 70 percent of the world’s consumer drones and 50 percent of industrial drones were accounted for in Shenzhen alone.
