VR Pioneer John Carmack Resigns From Meta

Following leaks on John Carmack’s resignation from Meta, the ex-virtual reality executive consultant confirmed his departure via a detailed social media post.

In a Facebook post, Carmack began with “This is the end of my decade in VR,” where the VR pioneer expressed his disappointments during his time working for Meta, in which he criticized them for “operating at half the effectiveness.”

When Meta acquired Oculus back in 2014, Carmack remained as Oculus’ chief technology officer, which he later stepped down from in 2019 to become Consulting CTO instead. Looking back on the acquisition, Carmack wrote, “I could have moved to Menlo Park after the Oculus acquisition and tried to wage battles with generations of leadership, but I was busy programming, and I assumed I would hate it, be bad at it, and probably lose anyway.”

“VR can bring value to most of the people in the world, and no company is better positioned to do it than Meta,” Carmack added, “ Maybe it actually is possible to get there by just plowing ahead with current practices, but there is plenty of room for improvement.” The concluding line to his post reads, “Make better decisions and fill your products with “Give a Damn”!”
