Following the release of “Law of Averages,” Vince Staples is gearing up for the drop of his first album in the three years with the release of a downbeat track, titled “Are You With That?,” set to land on the forthcoming record.
Similar to his last release, the single lands on the shorter side, clocking in just over two minutes, and employs long-time collaborator and producer Kenny Beats along with Reske. With a relaxed-yet-pressing cadence, Staples raps about the various dangers of society and the reality of living with fear atop a consistent, bouncing beat.
“You switched on me/ Mama told me ’bout you snakes/ Keep my shit off safety/ You know you can never be too safe,” he sings on the track.
Staples upcoming self-titled album is slated to drop this Friday, July 9, via Blacksmith Recordings and Motown Records. In conversation with Apple Music‘s Zane Lowe, the rapper explained the reasoning behind his decision to name the reflective record after himself.
“People always say, ‘Oh, you used to always say these stories and this and that, and I don’t notice much about these specific things. Why don’t you put it into the music?’ And it’ll be stuff that has been in songs for years,” he said. “And then I realize… the backdrop wasn’t right for certain things I was saying or vice versa. So I feel like this is kind of very descript and distinct of kind of where… not just where I come from, it’s not a bunch of glory stories or things like that, I guess it’s just more personal.”
