USWNT vs. Sweden score: USA eliminated from the Women's World Cup after penalty shootout

The U.S. women’s national team’s quest for an unprecedented three-peat is over after losing 5-4 on penalties to Sweden in the round of 16. This marks the earliest Women’s World Cup exit for the USWNT ever.

The four-time champions outplayed Sweden during the 120 minutes of play and put out a performance that was much improved from an inconsistent group stage. Despite their 22 shots and 11 on target, the USWNT could not break the deadlock thanks in large part to goalkeeper Zecira Musovic’s heroics.

Sweden could not muster much in attack but advanced to penalties, where the USWNT eventually lost after reaching sudden death. Sweden move on to play Japan in the quarterfinals on Friday.
