Universal Studios Japan and The Pokémon Company have announced that they will enter a long-term partnership to explore a series of innovative and immersive entertainment activations based on the world of Pokémon, which will begin in 2022. Notably, the creative alliance will bring Pokémon to life in a “revolutionary” theme park experience.
“The globally popular Pokémon characters combined with Universal’s innovative approach to creating authentic and one-of-a-kind theme park entertainment promise excitement for the entire family,” said J.L. Bonnier, president and CEO of Universal Studios Japan, in a statement. “Our efforts to develop new guest experiences will continue to help reinvigorate the tourism market.”
Details on exactly what the attractions or experiences will look like have not yet been revealed.
“The incredible team at Universal Studios Japan have the creative vision and leading expertise in world-class theme park technology to imagine a uniquely Pokémon experience,” said Tsunekazu Ishihara, president and CEO of The Pokémon Company. “This strategic alliance with Universal Studios Japan reflects our commitment to continue delivering the joy of Pokémon in ever-evolving ways for years to come.”
Pokémon is not the first Nintendo series to receive a theme park location; in March 2021, Universal Studios Japan in Osaka opened Super Nintendo World, which hosts a slew of game-inspired rides including Mario Kart and a Yoshi’s Adventure ride. The company has announced they will continue to expand Super Nintendo World with a Donkey Kong-inspired section in 2024.
