Sampling has become an emblematic part of Tyrrell Winston’s art. He uses a variety of discarded objects, such as deflated basketballs and cigarette butts, to comment on the link between the often disparate worlds of art and sports. Following the success of his recent show at Stems Gallery, the Brooklyn-based artist unveiled a new exhibition at Library Street Collective, titled “Hail Mary.”
As his second solo show with Detroit gallery, “Hail Mary” showcases new works from his Skewers series and Punishment Paintings. In the first, Winston uses deflated basketballs he’s found across New York City to create abstract sculptural compositions. By retaining the exact spherical shape of the ball, Winston imbues feelings of nostalgia and angst within the history of the object — showcasing broad documentation of human existence.
In the latter, Winston transitions from found material to traditional painting, where he repeatedly distorts the signatures of iconic athletes who all carried a little controversy later in life. Speaking on the series, Winston notes:
“Within the performance of creating these, there is a level of toying with and touching immortality. As a society, we look up to these athletes—as flawed as some of them might be—as immortal and that’s one of the things we’re drawn to. We’re drawn to the legacy, to superhuman accomplishments. In desecrating that, they take on a new form of authorship and there is a lot of power in that gesture.”
Punishment asks several questions of the viewer: “How does the value change when signatures are replicated by a different hand? How is value affected when signatures are vandalized?” Answer for yourself as “Hail Mary” goes on view at Library Street Collective until March 3, 2022.
Elsewhere, Tomás Sánchez will release En El Paisaje Interior With Avant Arte.
