2023’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) officially kicks off this week in Las Vegas, but as is tradition the announcements have already been coming thick and fast in the days leading up to the show. Most interesting for me are the TV reveals, not least because LG’s popular OLEDs finally have some proper competition from Samsung’s QD-OLED panels nowadays.

You can read about LG’s new TVs right here, and see some hints of what’s coming in Samsung’s 2023 lineup in this press release. The latter also has a huge array of monitors it’s announcing at the show including this massive 57-inch ultrawide model, these QD-OLED displays, and this 5K display. Oh, and it’s got some new transforming devices for good measure. Follow along with all our CES news right here.

Away from CES, Microsoft’s is still sparring with regulators as it attempts to purchase Call of Duty publisher Activision Blizzard. The latest twist is that Microsoft’s lawyers have claimed in a filing with the FTC that it doesn’t know when Call of Duty originally came out. I have no doubt that there’s some expert legal maneuvering going on here, but from a non-legal perspective it all seems pretty daft to me.

Anyway, here’s a silly tweet to start your day:

Get ready for another six to nine months of Pixel Fold rumors.

Google’s attempt at a folding phone might be one of the longest running device rumors at this point, as we’ve heard reports about it for years.

Now a new report indicates that it is planned for a fall launch this year, a little later than the Google I/O timeline previously reported.

Of course, Google could very well announce it at I/O in May or June and then formally launch it in the fall — that’s exactly what happened with the Pixel 7 / 7 Pro and Pixel Watch in 2022.

Either way, we’re ready for some folding phone competition for Samsung here in the US.

    Green light.

The traditional holiday slowdown is over, as it’s a new year and, of course, a new CES.

LG and Samsung aren’t waiting for the show floor to open to kick off their announcements of new screens in all kinds of shapes and sizes, but I’m more curious about the new smart home and automotive tech that will be on display.

OnePlus 11 photographed once more, a day before its Chinese launch.

I’m barely getting over my New Year’s hangover, and already there’s a new flagship OnePlus smartphone about to launch. The Oppo subsidiary plans to officially announce the phone in its home market tomorrow, ahead of its global launch next month. For now, here’s a leaked photo of the new device which Playfuldroid spotted on Weibo (click through for more images).

2,000 nits is around double what was offered by last year’s brightest OLED TVs, but only slightly higher than what LG’s competing sets may reach in 2023.

Netflix cancels 1899 after just one season.

The mind-bending sci-fi mystery series has ranked as one of Netflix’s most-watched shows since its release in November 2022.

Creators Baran bo Odar and Jantje Freise (also behind Dark) announced on Instagram that 1899 wouldn’t be renewed despite hopes for an additional two seasons, leaving the series on a frustrating cliffhanger. “Sometimes things don’t turn out the way you planned.”

The ViewFinity S9 offers the same size and resolution as Apple’s Studio Display in a similarly stylish design. And you don’t have to pay anything extra for its anti-glare finish.
