Toyota Revives Rally Legacy with GR86 Concept at SEMA 2024

Toyota Revives Rally Legacy with GR86 Concept at SEMA 2024

At the 2024 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, Toyota unveiled the GR86 Rally Legacy Concept, a thrilling tribute to its iconic rally heritage. Designed as a modern reimagining of the legendary 1990s Celica GT-Four rally cars, this concept combines classic rally spirit with the latest in Toyota’s performance engineering.

The GR86 Rally Legacy Concept, based on the 2024 GR86 Performance Package, integrates a 3-cylinder turbocharged GR-FOUR AWD system, borrowed from the GR Corolla. This powertrain transformation required extensive modifications to the GR86’s chassis and suspension. A custom subframe and engine mounts were added to accommodate the G16E-GTS engine, along with bespoke front suspension components and custom coil-over dampers. The rear axle setup includes the GR Corolla’s differential, ensuring balanced power distribution and seamless electronics functionality.

Visually, the GR86 Rally Legacy Concept wears a Halo White exterior accented with Toyota Gazoo Racing’s red and green color palette, large red rally mudflaps and a Celica GT-Four-inspired spoiler. Inside, the car features racing seats, red six-point harnesses and a full white-painted roll cage, enhancing its rally-ready feel.

“This concept is a fantasy come to life for GR and Toyota Rally fans,” said Mike Tripp, Toyota’s Vice President of Marketing, adding “It’s a nod to our rally legacy and a celebration of our motorsports future.”

The GR86 Rally Legacy Concept, sporting 300 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque, will be on display for viewers to check out in person from November 5 through 8 at Toyota’s booth in the Central Hall.
