Earlier this year, Toyota Gazoo Racing launched a commercial campaign with Shuichi Shigeno‘s iconic Initial D anime series. The campaigns rolled out in chapters with protagonist Takumi Fujiwara encountering a bright red 2022 Toyota GR86 as he makes his nightly run in his Fujiwara Tofu Shop marked AE86.
Following the “Mastering the Craft” and “Pursuit” chapters, Takum is overtaken by the mysterious GR86 in the final chapter, titled “The Challenge.” As the drivers come face to face, it is revealed that the driver of the GR86 is Keiichi Tsuchiya, also known as the “Drift King,” the man responsible for popularizing touge racing.
The newest commercial starts off with Takumi on his nightly run once again, encountering his final Project D opponent, Shinji Inui of Sidewinder, now driving an orange Toyota GT86. Ultimately, Takumi overtakes his former opponent with his signature Blind Attack before the red 2022 Toyota GR86 begins a fierce back-and-forth with him.
The commercial reveals that Takumi’s father, Bunta, is driving at GR86, ending with the two meeting back at Fujiwara Tofu Shop and Takumi running to get a better look at the car.
