Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld has made it clear that he wants to leave the north London club this summer.
According to reports from The Atheltic, the Belgian defender wants to end his six-year stay at Spurs, and he is confident that a move can be completed after Euro 2020.
The 32-year-old joined Spurs from Atletico Madrid in 2015 and has made over 240 appearances for the club in all competitions.
In December 2019, the Belgian centre-back signed a contract extension at the club till 2023. However, he is now looking to leave Spurs this summer, and the club won’t stand in his way if they get a good offer.
It has been reported that Alderweireld has been getting attention from his hometown club Royal Antwerp, as well as from clubs in Italy and Spain. A move to his former club Ajax cannot be completely ruled out either.
The Belgian defender has always wanted to return to Antwerp, but the question remains whether they can afford him. He is on £100,000 per week wages at the club and may need to take a significant pay cut to seal an emotional return to his boyhood club.
Alderweireld has established himself as one of the finest centre-backs in the Premier League, but he is expected to drop down the pecking order at the club if Fabio Paratici manages to land his top defensive targets.
While the Belgian is still capable of producing quality performances, as he produced for his country during the European championships, his lack of pace has also been exposed at times over the last couple of years and doubts remain about whether he is suited to Nuno Espirito Santo’s style of football.
Spurs will try to sign two defenders this summer, with Jules Kounde of Sevilla and Lyon’s Joachim Andersen are their top targets.
