Later this month, Tomoo Gokita will present his debut solo exhibition with Petzel Gallery at its Chelsea location in New York.
Known for his boundary-pushing and highly-characterized grayscale paintings, the show will mark a new era for the Japanese artist, who will be presenting a collection of new paintings that serve as an expanded study of new and innovative artistic techniques, as well as bolder color palettes.
The inspiration for this new body of artwork derived from a rather mundane encounter, where the artist picked up a booklet with simple illustrations of everyday objects near his studio. Turns out, the booklet was created for dementia patients as mnemonic exercises.
From there, Gokita experimented with the physicality of layered paper on canvases, which became the basis of the paintings for the upcoming exhibition. Spotlighted pieces include Clothing Store, an 182cm x 227.5cm painting, created with mixed mediums such as pencils and paper.
Tomoo Gokita’s new solo show will open at Petzel Gallery’s Chelsea branch on September 14 and will remain on view until October 21, 2023. In the meantime, preview some of his new artworks above and visit the gallery’s website for more details.
