Tomi Ungerer Will Be Honored at Hamburg’s Deichtorhallen

Tomi Ungerer was one of the world’s most beloved graphic artists and authors of children’s novels. Having published over 140 books in 30 different languages, Ungerer is revered for challenging social norms through breath-taking originality and universally understood charm.

Next month, the Deichtorhallen in Hamburg will present “Tomi Ungerer: It’s All About Freedom,” the first retrospective on the artist’s fascinating life and career. The show is in conjunction with the Tomi Ungerer Estate and the Musée Tomi Ungerer in Strasbourg and features over 400 drawings and illustrations that date back to the 1930s.

More than just children’s novels, Ungerer took stances on many pressing issues during his life, such as his anti-Vietnam posters and satirical artwork that challenged the racial injustices of the ’60s. As shown in the documentary above, the artist was immensely modest and continually sought to reinvent himself as his work and the world around him continued to change. “Tomi Ungerer: It’s All About Freedom” will be on view at Hamburg’s Deichtorhallen from November 27 to April 24.

In other art-related news, Vincent Tsang has worked with Letter Bet on a sleek amorphous sculpture.
