Members of the nonprofit, The Miraculous Love Kids, released a new video performing the Tom Morello-written song, “God Help Us All.” The new song commemorates six months since the U.S. withdrew its troops from Afghanistan and the country fell to the Taliban. The video features a number of musicians in addition to Morello including drummer Nandi Bushell, Julien Baker, Serj Tankian, Cass McCombs, Aaron Lee Tasjan, and Nils Lofgren.
Before the U.S. withdrawal on August 15, 2021, The Miraculous Love Kids was Afghanistan’s only school of music where girls and young women could participate and learn how to play the guitar. In the immediate aftermath of the fall, the nonprofit said in a statement: “Today, our lives are in great danger as the success we achieved in becoming part of an international cultural scene has now marked us for persecution.”
The video for “God Help Us All” was one of the last videos the group’s founder and director Lanny Cordola was able to shoot prior to the violence. “It has been a hellish past six months trying to evacuate and relocate the girls and their families,” Cordola said. “Tom Morello’s soul hymn perfectly encapsulates this feeling.”
Cordola continued: “The convergence of all these talents truly shows how music can unify artists from different idioms and cultures to lend their voices to the vulnerable, marginalized suffering souls of the Earth. I also feel this song reaches out to the inner ache that so many are feeling these days. Tom has been a Godsend to the girls and I on so many levels.”
