The project borrows its title from the singer’s 2021 EP of the same name, which birthed the Brandy-assisted international hit ‘Somebody’s Son’. It will be available in over 240 countries and territories worldwide, following its acquisition by the global streaming giant.
“This has been over two years in the making and I must say this is probably one of the most adventurous, fulfilling things I’ve done,” Tiwa Savage, who is the film’s lead actor and executive producer, said. “[I] honestly can’t wait to take you guys along with me on this next phase of my life and art. I’m just getting started.”
Filmed in Cape Coast, Ghana, the movie’s narrative revolves around Aisha (Tiwa Savage), an ambitious fashion designer who returns to her native home in West Africa after a decade in the US, due to a family bereavement. The storyline unfolds against the backdrop of escalating violence and heightened tensions, exploring Aisha’s reconnection with family, old friends and a past love. Water and Garri features a cast including Mike Afolarin, Andrew Bunting, and Jemima Osunde.
“Audiences around the world are looking for well-made, contemporary African stories, and Water and Garri delivers that with a fresh perspective,” Prime Video director of content acquisition Ayanna Lonian said. “Both Meji Alabi, as film director, and Tiwa Savage, as the lead, have truly delivered a stellar debut alongside the rest of the incredibly talented cast and crew.”
Tiwa Savage added: “Developing and shooting my film from an idea to launching globally on Prime Video is a dream fulfilled. I am excited for my fans and newer audiences to experience this vulnerable side of me that I have never shown. Meji Alabi brought the story to life in such a beautiful way, and I cannot wait to share it with the world.”
A multiple award winner, Tiwa Savage is behind three albums, namely Once Upon A Time, R.E.D and Celia. Last year, she was among the contemporary African musicians featured on Africa Unite, a posthumous Bob Marley and the Wailers album honouring Marley’s greatest hits. Tiwa Savage guested on a remake of ‘Waiting in Vain’.
