Tim Allen recently spoke to Collider teasing details of the script for the highly anticipated Toy Story 5. Giving fans a glimpse of what to expect, the 71-year-old actor opened up about returning as the titular voice of Buzz Lightyear.
In the interview, Allen shared, “I just did the first five-hour session for Buzz, probably a week ago.” He added, “It’s really, really weird to get back in it. I can’t tell you anything.” While no plot details were shared, Allen does tease that the script is unlike anything he has ever read, “It’s a very, very clever story.” He continued, “Do you wanna do five of these? I don’t really believe it’s about the money. I’m sure they want it to be a success, but that’s not why they did it.” The actor had nothing but praise for the storyline and script adding, “Had they not come up with a brilliant script, they wouldn’t have done it and they wouldn’t have called me and Tom [Hanks].” He doubles down on how “clever” the plot is but admitted that returning to the character at first “was really a struggle to get” and “then maybe two hours in, I was doing Buzz.”
On the character he has played since Toy Story arrived on the scene in 1995, Allen was candid and said, “I’m so blessed to be Buzz Lightyear, to be honest. It’s gonna be fun.” He reveals what the production process is looking like stating, “I think we’re a year out. I’ve gotten up to the third act. We’ll do the third act. And then, we’ll go back and clean it. And then, I’ll do it about five more times. It’s a really good story, guys. It’s really good.” Allen reflects on how the franchise becoming a catalyst for his friendship with Tom Hanks calling it emotional for the two of them, “With Toy Story 4, when I said, ‘To infinity,’ and Tom said ‘and beyond,’ it was so emotional for the two of us. We’re real close friends, and I loved that.”
Toy Story 5 is slated to release on June 19, 2026.
