I don’t need to tell you gingham isn’t exactly a groundbreaking print. If you went to primary school in the UK and wore a dress, you almost definitely wore a version of it at some point. The print loved by Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz has, unsurprisingly, been around for centuries. It’s thought to have originated in Southeast Asia and was later seen in the 18th century in mills in Manchester. But it’s no longer just a twee preppy print associated with school-girl pinafores—it can now fit into any wardrobe.
In the fashion world, gingham (like polka dots and florals) rolls around every summer. It’s why it’s always a good idea to invest in the print as you’ll wear it for so many summers to come. But don’t start yawning yet, because 2020’s take on the print is one of the more exciting we’ve seen in a while. There are bold green versions from Topshop and Scandi brand Avavav. Then there are colourful co-ord sets from Miu Miu as well as & Other Stories. Of course, there is still a lot of black gingham, so if you’re looking for something a bit more traditional, worry not…
