Rule number one of dressing for the English winter? Never underestimate the outfit-transforming powers of a statement knit. It’s a tenet that is sure to become increasingly relevant as we enter our first winter with the backdrop of social distancing and as jumpers start to become a key source of creativity (especially if Zoom has anything to do with it). While in previous years coats were the hero item of the colder months, it feels as though the limitations on outdoor events and commuting will mean that what lies beneath will get all the attention.
More often than not, I’ll throw on a jumper at some point during the day when I’m working from home, but there’s something about a bright colour or fun print that makes the process so much more enjoyable. Simple jeans and a t-shirt suddenly look 10 times better with a statement knit, and a summer dress can be instantly adapted for a chilly walk with an oversized cardi. This is really about finding whatever puts a smile on your face, be it an unusual trim, a pop of purple, or a retro collar. Personally, I’m loving the throwback vibes of Fair Isle and the statement-making powers of grass green this season. They’re just what my beige knitted trousers need as we head into winter.
