The Who Now Has a U.K. Coin

The Who Now Has a U.K. Coin

Created by artist Henry Gray, each coin features a Union flag, mod logo and classic Rickenbacker guitar captured in the form of a pinball table, a nod to The Who’s rock opera Tommy.

Prices start at £13 ($18) for the 2021 £5 coin ($7). For the superfan with deep pockets, the “one ounce gold proof coin” will set you back £2,315 ($3,271).

The classic lineup of The Who featured Roger Daltrey on vocals, guitarist Pete Townshend, bass player John “The Ox” Entwistle and drummer Keith Moon. Moon died in 1978, and Entwistle passed in 2002. The current incarnation of the band, featuring Daltrey and Townshend, is booked for a handful of U.S. dates starting Aug. 19 at the Shell in San Diego, CA.

“It’s not often that a band will span generations,” reads a statement from the Mint, “but The Who, with their explosive performances, have been a part of Britain’s soundtrack for more than 50 years.”

The coins are part of the Mint’s “Music Legends” collection, which has included special sets dedicated to Queen, David Bowie and Elton John.
