The Tallest Man on Earth Announces New Covers Album Too Late for Edelweiss

The Tallest Man on Earth has announced a new covers album. Too Late for Edelweiss is due out this Friday, September 23, via Anti-. The 10-track release includes covers of songs popularized by Bon Iver, Lucinda Williams, Yo La Tengo, the National, Hank Williams, and more.

The album takes its name from “För sent för Edelweiss,” a song by the Swedish pop musician Håkan Hellström that’s also covered on the album. The LP was recorded in Tallest Man on Earth songwriter Kristian Matsson’s native Sweden and in North Carolina between sessions for a new album of original songs. As Matsson shared in statement:

This past year, I’ve spent a lot of time touring but also writing and recording an album that I’m wildly proud of and will see the light of day eventually. But in the small hours in between trips and sessions, mostly in my house in Sweden and an Airbnb in North Carolina, I lo-fi recorded some covers here and there. Many times as a reset button for my own song writing, to cleanse the palate from my whirlpool mind while writing songs. A little document of songs I had on my mind during those nights.

Ahead of the release, Matsson has shared his rendition of Hank Williams’ “Lost Highway.” The song is often credited to Texas country singer Leon Payne, who released his version of the song on the Nashville-based label Bullet Records in 1948. Williams’ rendition of the single was released on his 1949 album of the same name, and has since been covered by Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, and Townes Van Zandt, among others.

Following the release of his covers album, the Tallest Man on Earth will head out on tour, with dates across Europe beginning in April 2023. Matsson will kick things off in Copenhagen before making his way through the United Kingdom and back to continental Europe, with performances in cities including Paris, Amsterdam, Milan, and Berlin before returning to Sweden for performances in Malmö, Stockholm, and Gothenburg.
