The Shed Presents “Sonic Sphere,” a Floating Concert Hall

The Shed Presents "Sonic Sphere," a Floating Concert Hall

The Shed is hosting a unique experience at its 115-foot-tall McCourt space, suspending a spherical concert hall titled “Sonic Sphere” in mid-air. The 65-foot-diameter Sphere will display immersive visuals and 3D sounds produced by a number of renowned artists including The xx, Yaeji, Steve Reich, Carl Craig, Madame Gandhi, yunè pinku, UNIIQU3, and Igor Levit in collaboration with Rirkrit Tiravanija. A number of 45-minute sessions, both live and recorded, will be shown each day.

The listening platform, which is suspended 34 feet off the ground, is accessible via three flights of stairs or a lift. Inside is lounge chair-like seating as well as standing sections. Integrated into the sphere are more than 100 speakers that move sound in every direction, through and around your body. The sound and light waves work in unison, creating hyperreal, multisensory experiences.

Inspired by German composer Karlheinz Stockhausen’s Kugelauditorium, a nearly spherical concert hall built for the 1970 World Expo in Osaka, the latest Sonic Sphere is the 11th and most advanced iteration created so far.

Sonic Sphere at The Shed will run at The Shed from June 16 to July 7. Tickets can be purchased here.
