Netflix‘s highly-anticipated live-action rendition of Eiichiro Oda‘s classic anime ONE PIECE is right around the corner — and anticipation for its release is building. The streamer’s live-action take on the highest-grossing manga of all time will follow the same story of the Straw Hat Pirates’ treacherous trek to treasure, and, in a top-tier bit of fan service, it’s been announced that it’ll pay tribute to the series’ lengthy history by bringing in the original Japanese voice actors to dub over their respective characters.
At this year’s Anime Expo in Los Angeles, One Piece revealed that original voice actors Mayumi Tanaka, Kazuya Nakai, Kappei Yamaguchi, Akemi Okamura and Hiroaki Hirata will serve as the dub voices for Luffy, Zoro, Usopp, Nami and Sanji, respectively. The live-action series features Iñaki Godoy as Luffy, Taz Skylar as Sanji, Mackenyu as Zoro, Emily Rudd as Nami and Jacob Gibson as Usopp. Godoy and Skylar are slated to record the Spanish dub for characters Luffy and Sanji, respectively. Additionally, Eiichiro Oda himself took an active role in Netflix’s One Piece adaptation and “promised” not to let Netflix go forth with its release until he is satisfied.
ONE PIECE also made news last week when reports from Daily Dose of Anime and Sportskeeda revealed the show has a whopping per-episode budget of $18 million USD.
