The Only Way to Delete Your Threads Profile Is By Deleting Your Whole Instagram Account

Threads, Meta’s newly-launched Twitter rival, is the hottest thing on the Internet right now. The Instagram-related app was rolled out in more than 100 countries on Wednesday, and according to co-founder and chief executive Mark Zuckerberg, the platform achieved 10 million signups in only seven hours. But there’s one important caveat hidden in the fine text: in order to delete Threads accounts, users must also delete their associated Instagram pages.

According to Meta’s Supplemental Privacy Policy, “You may deactivate your Threads profile at any time, but your Threads profile can only be deleted by deleting your Instagram account.” Meta continues to explain that Threads is an extension of a user’s Instagram account, so the policy exists to ensure their connection. Still, the rule came as a surprise to many users, as the app exists separately from Instagram.

On his own Threads account, Zuckerberg detailed his plan for the new platform. “I think there should be a public conversations app with 1 billion+ people on it. Twitter has had the opportunity to do this but hasn’t nailed it. Hopefully, we will.”

In the meantime, follow along as Hypebeast joins the conversation on Threads.

In more tech news, Twitter removed login requirements for viewing tweets.
