According to reports, The Matrix Resurrections debuted with $69.8 million USD during its debut weekend at the global box office.
It’s important to note that the film, which officially hit theaters on December 22, received a simultaneous release on HBO Max. Still, the movie managed to rake in $22.5 million USD in the domestic box office.
Additionally, the film reported its top ten markets in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Dallas, Chicago, Houston, Phoenix, Seattle, Atlanta and Washington DC, respectively.
Prior to its widespread release, The Matrix Resurrections received a largely mixed batch of reviews from critics, clocking in at a conservative 70% on Rotten Tomatoes. The audience score has since landed at 64% on the site.
The long-awaited sequel stars Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Priyanka Chopra, Jessica Henwick, Laurence Fishburne, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris, Jada Pinkett Smith and several others. Lana Wachowski, who directed the original Matrix film alongside her sister, Lilly Wachowski, returned as the director of the latest movie in the franchise.
The Matrix Resurrections is now in theaters in the United States, Canada, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom, France and Mexico. The film is also available to stream on HBO Max.
Elsewhere, Spider-Man: No Way Home is now the highest-grossing film of 2021.
