The critics’ reviews are now in for The Matrix Ruserrections and the film has clocked in at a conservative 70% on Rotten Tomatoes.
While most of the reviews tended slightly towards the positive side, initial reactions to the long-awaited sequel remained largely mixed, with some noting its brilliance for paying tribute to the franchise’s iconic heritage while driving it in a new direction and the others calling it a simple rehash.
“Teetering between a meta-reckoning with the legacy of the first trilogy and a sincere blooming of a whole new story that feels boldly romantic, Lana Wachowski‘s first feature solo is a thrilling triumph,” says Vulture‘s Angelica Jade Bastién, with Deadline‘s Valerie Complex adding that “It focuses on telling a heartfelt story that rings as true to reality as possible,” something that
“may cause hard-core Matrix lovers to loathe the direction that’s been taken, but it’s a breath of fresh air for me.”
On the other side of the spectrum, Rachel Wagner emphatically said she “hated practically every minute of it,” while Mashable‘s Alison Foreman pointed out that “Resurrections shouldn’t be absolved of the criticism other films like it have faced for prioritizing rehashed fan service over good storytelling — no matter how cleverly it explains that away.”
Of course, with the film premiering at theaters for the rest of us today, Rotten Tomatoes is still awaiting an audience score, so those debating whether to see The Matrix Resurrections might have to wait a little longer for those other comments to flood in.
Elsewhere in entertainment, more than 50,000 fans have now signed a petition to renew Cowboy Bebop for a second season on Netflix.
