Amapiano – a music genre of South African descent which consists of deep house, jazz and lounge music. It is characterized by synths, airy pads and wide and percussive basslines.
In 2020, the genre experienced increased popularity across the African continent with noted increases in digital streams and chart successes in countries far from its South African origin.
The Amapiano influence in Nigeria music became really heavy towards the end of last year and it has rolled into the new year.
Producers like Rexxie, Altims and Niphkeys have merged the amapiano’s bright piano chords with the infectious bounce of Afropop music, crafting euphoric anthems.

Among the Amapiano records that has been released so far this year Naira Marley‘s Coming which featured Busiswa, a South African artist and also one of the artists that has perfected the sound has turned out to be the biggest of the pack.
The last time a sound from another African country heavily influenced the Afropop sound was the Ghanaian “Banku” sound which was pushed by Mr Eazi and Runtown.
