Announced alongside Horizon and God of War TV shows coming to streaming platforms, the Hollywood adaptation of Gran Turismo now has a plot. Building on the popularity of the racing simulation video game series from Polyphony Digital, the upcoming movie will focus on the competitive element of Gran Turismo.
Reports note that the film is “Based on a true story, the film is the ultimate wish-fulfillment tale of a teenage Gran Turismo player whose gaming skills won a series of Nissan competitions to become an actual professional race car driver.” The brief plot note is believed to be inspired by Lucas Ordóñez, who was the inaugural winner of the GT Academy, an international virtual-to-reality competition by Nissan, Sony PlayStation and Polyphony Digital. Ordóñez went on to reach the podium with Nissan in the European GT4 Cup campaign, score two victories and finish the season as a runner-up in the championship.
The Gran Turismo film currently in early development from Sony PlayStation Productions will be directed by District 9 and Elysium’s Neill Blomkamp. Look for the Hollywood adaptation to be released August 11, 2023.
