Teezo Touchdown Enlists Janelle Monáe for Edgy Yet Ethereal “You Thought”

When Teezo Touchdown got the Drake and Janelle Monáe cosigns on his upcoming album – having played the album for the two musical greats before anyone else – fans grew even more eager for the rapper’s debut studio release. Fresh off Travis Scott‘s UTOPIA, the emerging rapper continues to flex his unique way of intertwining hip-hop and trap with edgy pop-punk influences; on his newest single “You Thought,” Teezo does what he does best – and enlists Monáe to contribute her genre-bending finesse as well.

The three-minute track opens with an alternative guitar beat and building percussion, with Teezo spitting his signature flow over the punk-rock instrumentals. One minute in, the beat significantly softens, and Teezo taps into his more melodic, vulnerable side. “You would’ve thought that we was movin’ how fast she’s packin’ / You would’ve thought someone yelled “action” with how you’re actin’ / You would’ve thought we were in Aspen how cold your a*s been / I would’ve thought that we could talk about whatever happened,” he sings on the second verse. Monáe joins in on the chorus (“I thought that we / I thought we were better than that”), as the duo’s harmonies evoke a magical energy that rings so differently from the hard-hitting first minute of the cut.

“You Thought” – the album’s lead single – is available to stream on Spotify and Apple Music. Keep an eye on Teezo’s Twitter and HYPEBEAST Music to catch any more updates before how do you sleep at night? drops next Friday, September 8.
