TDE’s Punch Shares Last-Minute Change Kendrick Lamar Made to ‘good kid, m.A.A.d city’

Saturday, October 22, marked ten years since Kendrick Lamar put out his influential sophomore album, good kid, m.A.A.d city through Top Dawg Entertainment, marking the rapper’s first major label project.

A decade after its release, TDE President Terrence “Punch” Henderson has revealed that Lamar was working on the LP just hours before submitting the completed version to the label.

“Man it’s so much to say about that album,” Punch wrote in a tweet. “We all put everything into it. GKMC was the start.”
“We made our mark in Hip Hop and music in general with that album. I’m forever grateful to have played a part in it”

Asked about his favorite memory in the process of making GKMC, Punch said that while he “can’t think of a favorite,” he reflected on Lamar’s hard-hitting hook on the titular track “m.A.A.d city,” which was produced by Sounwave, THC and Terrace Martin.
“One memory is Kdot adding the hook part on madd city literally hours before mastering,” Punch shared. “I think he actually had to send the hook cause Ali [MixedByAli] had left to get it mastered already. So that song was just one verse at first.”

Lamar’s hook ended up making the song one of the standout tracks of GKMC.

“Man down, where you from, n***a? / Fuck who you know — where you from, my n***a? / Where your grandma stay, huh, my n***a? / This m.A.A.d city I run, my n***a,” Lamar raps.
