Justin Bieber, Dan + Shay, Taylor Swift and The Weeknd were the top winners at the Americn Music Awards on Sunday (Nov. 22), winning three awards each. Swift extended her lead as the artist with the most awards in the show’s 47-year history. She has now won 32 AMAs, eight more than runner-up Michael Jackson. Bieber has now won 18 awards, which puts him in sixth place on the all-time winners list.
Taraji P. Henson hosted the show, which was broadcast from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.
Swift won artist of the year for the sixth time, extending her record in that category; favorite female artist—pop/rock for the fifth time, setting a new record in that category; and favorite video for the second year in a row. In the female pop/rock vocalist category, Swift pushed past Whitney Houston and Olivia Newton-John, who each won the award four times.
Swift accepted the artist of the year award by video. She explained her absence by saying that she was busy re-recording her earlier albums.

Bieber won favorite male artist—pop/rock for the fourth time, setting a record for the most wins in that category. He pushes ahead of Michael Bolton, Eric Clapton, Jackson and Barry Manilow, who each won the award three times. Bieber also won two awards for “10,000 Hours,” his genre-blurring collab with Dan + Shay. The smash won collaboration of the year and favorite single—country.
In the five years that the AMAs have presented favorite song awards by genre, Bieber has now won in three distinct genres. He took favorite song—pop/rock in 2016 with “Love Yourself” and again in 2017 as featured artist on Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee’s “Despacito.” He took favorite song—rap/hip-hop in 2017 as a featured artist on DJ Khaled’s “I’m the One.”
In addition to the two awards they shared with Bieber, Dan + Shay took favorite duo or group—country for the second year in a row.

The Weeknd also won three awards—all in the soul/R&B field. He took favorite male artist for the second time, favorite album (After Hours) for the second time and favorite song (“Heartless”) for the first time.
Bad Bunny, BTS, Doja Cat and Nicki Minaj all won two awards on the night.
Doja Cat won new artist of the year. She topped Roddy Ricch, whose nomination for the top award—artist of the year—had suggested that he was the front-runner for the new artist prize. Doja Cat also won for favorite female artist—soul/R&B. It’s the first time in 14 years that this award has gone to someone other than Rihanna or Beyoncé.
There was a similar story in the favorite female artist—country category. Maren Morris won, marking the first time in 14 years that that award has gone to someone other than Swift or Carrie Underwood.

BTS took favorite social artist for the third straight year—the entire time the award has been presented. The K-pop sensations also took favorite duo or group—pop/rock for the second year in a row.
Harry Styles’ Fine Line took favorite album—pop/rock. As part of One Direction, Styles had won twice in the category in 2013-14. He’s the first artist to win the category both solo and as part of a group or duo.
Juice WRLD won favorite male artist–rap/hip-hop nearly a year after his death from a drug-induced seizure. He’s the second artist to win posthumously in the category. 2Pac won favorite rap/hip-hop artist in 1997, four months after he was shot to death.

All-female collabs took two of the five song awards. Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion took favorite single—rap/hip-hop for “WAP.” Karol G and Minaj won favorite song—Latin for “Tusa.”
Lauren Daigle won favorite contemporary inspirational artist for the fourth time, pulling into a tie with Casting Crowns for the most wins in the category’s history.
