After teasing a concept back in November, BMW has now officially revealed its all-new XM, the automaker’s first-ever performance vehicle with an electrified drive system. The XM is a dedicated M car, the first since the ultra-exclusive M1 from the late ’70s, and features a plug-in hybrid system comprised of a V8 petrol engine and an electric motor.
Arriving in a large silhouette resembling what the X8 would have been, exteriors are sharper than that of BMW’s other SUVs with powerful contours, large kidney grilles, wide intakes, contour lighting, hexagonal dual tailpipes, and sharp split headlights. An accent band runs along the body, stretching above the door handles and over the windshields in an unfinished loop while BMW badges on the rear are noticeably absent. Distinctive 21-inch M light-alloy wheels come standard with 23-inch wheels also available as an option. Inside, drivers and passengers are greeted with a spacious interior featuring specially designed cushions, four-zone automatic climate control, a Harman Kardon Surround Sound System, and a prism-patterned headliner with 100 LED units.
In terms of performance, the hybrid powertrain produces 653 hp and a maximum overall torque of 590 lb-ft with 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) times reported at 4.3 seconds. Three different driving modes are available including SPORT, HYBRID, and ELECTRIC mode for cruising which produces zero emissions at speeds up to 87 mph. Sounds created by the legendary composer Hans Zimmer will arrive as a backing track for the electric motor’s power delivery with boost sounds underling the combustion engine.
The BMW XM starts at $159,995 USD, and a Label Red model, the most powerful road-legal series-produced car in BMW history, will be introduced soon at a starting price of $185,000 USD. Production will begin in December before arriving at dealers worldwide in spring 2023. More details can be found on the BMW Group website.
