Why Wilfried Zaha is no longer taking the knee

Wilfried Zaha became the first Premier League player not to kneel before kick-off on Saturday since top-flight footballers started using the gesture to protest racial injustice last summer. The Crystal Palace winger instead chose to “stand tall” ahead of the match with West Brom, something he had said in February he was going to do but hadn’t started a game since then due to injury. Zaha released a statement ahead of kick-off outlining his intention to do so and his reasons for it. What he said “My decision to stand at kick-off has been public knowledge for a couple of weeks now,” the Ivorian international said. “There is no right or wrong decision, but for me personally I feel kneeling has just become a part of the pre-match routine and at the moment it doesn’t matter whether we kneel or ...

Leicester edge up to second despite draw vs Crystal Palace

A much-changed Leicester moved up to second in the Premier League thanks to Harvey Barnes’ late equaliser in a 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace on Monday. Wilfried Zaha’s stunning near post volley put the Eagles in front against the run of play after Kelechi Iheanacho had a first-half penalty saved for Leicester. With little over 48 hours rest between the Foxes’ 2-2 draw with Manchester United on Saturday and the trip to Selhurst Park, Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers made seven changes with Jamie Vardy and Youri Tielemans among those left on the bench. Both were introduced midway through the second-half and Leicester’s pressure was rewarded with an equaliser when Barnes fired in a low shot from the edge of the box for his eighth goal of the season. Despite the upheaval of missing many of their st...

Roy Hodgson ‘really pleased’ as Crystal Palace hit 5 goals in West Brom rout

Wilfred Zaha was outstanding for Crystal Palace as they took advantage of the controversial dismissal of Matheus Pereira to claim their first points in three games with a rout at West Brom. Zaha had missed Palace’s previous two matches – both of which ended in defeat – after testing positive for Covid-19 but quickly found his feet again at The Hawthorns with a typically lively attacking display that included two goals and an assist. It was from his low cross that Darnell Furlong diverted the ball into his own net to give the visitors the lead and his whipped finish into the far corner that restored the advantage after Conor Gallagher’s low, driven equaliser. Between these two Zaha contributions, though, came the incident that completely altered the complexion of the game – Pereira’s red ca...

Premier League star tests positive for coronavirus

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson has revealed that Ivory Coast forward Wilfried Zaha is self-isolating after testing positive for Covid-19. Zaha was missing from the Palace squad for their Premier League match at Burnley on Monday as a result of the illness. “He has tested positive unfortunately for coronavirus so is self-isolating, and is awaiting the results of the next test,” Hodgson said. “He is not feeling particularly ill, but unfortunately the test proved positive and he is following the procedures.” Zaha’s absence is a blow to Palace after his fine start to the season. The 28-year-old has scored five goals and provided two assists for Hodgson’s team. He was due to make his 200th Premier League appearance in the Burnley match, but will be sidelined for the length of his quarantine...

Report: Everton make approach for 27-yr-old attacker, move could smash their transfer record

Everton could reignite their interest in the Crystal Palace winger Wilfred Zaha this summer. The Toffees were heavily linked with a move for the 27-year-old last summer but they failed to sign him despite offering massive sums of money. Football insider claims that Everton have asked Palace to keep them informed about the winger’s situation. It seems that the Eagles could cash in on their star player this year. It will be interesting to see if Everton can convince them to sell the player to them. There is no doubt that Everton need to add more pace and flair to their attack and Zaha would be ideal. The former Manchester United winger has proven himself in the Premier League over the last few years with Crystal Palace and he deserves to join a bigger team now. A world-class manager like Car...
