The 90 Greatest Albums of the ’90s

This article originally appeared in the September 1999 issue of SPIN. “You must be high.” We heard that a lot during the time we spent preparing this issue. Which is understandable. Pronouncing the 90 greatest albums of the ’90s is a somewhat presumptuous thing to do. When you’re measuring the music this decade is offering to history—the sounds we partied with, copulated to, fought about, and wept over—everyone has an opinion. That ours should be more valid than yours is debatable. But hey—it’s our magazine. What, then, you ask, constitutes “greatest”? Don’t even start. Suffice it to say that, after much heated discussion and countless veiled insults, it came down to the factors of both remarkable artistry and cultural shock value. Sometimes a record’s knock-you-off-your-Skechers impa...

Yo La Tengo Share New Single ‘Bleeding’

Even a covers project needs an original song. On Tuesday (Sept. 22) morning, Yo La Tengo shared “Bleeding,” the second single for their upcoming EP, Sleepless Night. The track features delicate guitar melodies and an overall atmospheric vibe from the crew. It’s the only original track off the forthcoming project. Along with the new song, the EP features covers of the Byrds, The Delmore Brothers, Bob Dylan, Ronnie Lane and the Flying Machine. Of course, this EP isn’t the first time the group has released covers, but their cover of The Byrds’ “Wasn’t Born To Follow” is still the most recent. Check out the group’s latest single below. Yo La Tengo Share Cover of the Byrds’ ‘Wasn’t Born To Follow,’ Announce New EP

Following the release of an EP recorded at their New Jersey rehearsal space last month, Yo La Tengo will be unveiling another EP, Sleepless Night, in October. The Byrds’ “Wasn’t Born to Follow” is the first song to arrive from the collection. The EP features one new song, “Bleeding,” plus covers of songs by The Delmore Brothers, Bob Dylan, Ronnie Lane, and The Flying Machine. The covers were initially released as one side of an LP included within a limited-edition catalog for the Los Angeles Country Museum of Art’s (LACMA) forthcoming retrospective for the Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara. Artist Nara, a longtime YLT fan, worked in collaboration with the group to choose the EP’s songs. This Matador version of the EP is a single-sided 12” with original cover art by Nara, a draw...

28 Musicians Predict the 2020 Baseball Season

Against all odds and the advice of many virologists, the 2020 MLB season is finally underway. Whether that’s a good idea in the midst of a pandemic is beside the point because it’s happening. Baseball is back, albeit in a much stranger fashion than anyone could have imagined when spring training began in February (which may as well have been 1923).  With a 60-game season looming and a bunch of bizarre rule changes in effect (universal DH, runner starting on second base in extra innings, expanded rosters, and more playoff teams), the season is set to be the most unpredictable in years. You know who else is stoked about the season finally starting? Musicians. There’s always been a romanticism between artists and baseball that makes perfect sense. Thus, we’ve summoned a panel of baseball...

For the fourth time this week, Yo La Tengo has shared a new song. Titled “Georgia considers the two blue ones (Thursday),” the all-instrumental song is a shade over eight minutes and is the latest song to be shared this week from the band’s April rehearsal sessions in New Jersey. The tune follows “James and Ira demonstrate mysticism and some confusion holds (Monday),” “Georgia thinks it’s probably okay (Tuesday),” and “James gets up and watches mourning birds with Abraham (Wednesday).” Expect a new song, based on how this week is going, to drop on Friday as well. Yo La Tengo hasn’t released a new album since 2018. Listen to “Georgia considers the blue ones (Thursday)” below. You Deserve to Make Money Even When you are looking for Dates Online. Yo La Tengo Share Another New Song on Bandcamp

A day after not only unveiling a Bandcamp page but sharing new material recorded while in quarantine, Yo La Tengo has released another new song. Just like “James and Ira demonstrate mysticism and some confusion holds (Monday),” “Georgia thinks it’s probably okay (Tuesday)” was recorded in at the band’s rehearsal space in Hoboken, New Jersey. Judging by the song titles, it seems likely that the band has a few more tunes on tap in the coming days. Earlier this year, it was announced that the group’s Electr-o-Pura would be reissued this year in honor of its 25th anniversary, and Lacey Dacus shared a cover of “Tom Courtenay” from it. The band’s previous album, There’s A Riot Going On, was released in 2018. Listen to “Georgia thinks it’s probably okay (Tuesday)” be...

Yo La Tengo Release New Song, Launch New Bandcamp Page

It’s been a few years since Yo La Tengo have released new music. But in quarantine, the indie vets decided to drop a new song titled “James and Ira demonstrate mysticism and some confusion holds (Monday)” that they recently recorded at their practice facility in New Jersey while in quarantine. The group shared the song on their new Bandcamp page. Ira Kaplan explained the origins of the song in a statement on the description on the newly-minted page: If you’ve spent any time hanging out with us at our rehearsal space in Hoboken—that pretty much covers none of you—you’ve heard us playing formlessly (he said, trying to sidestep the word “improvising”). Most of the songs we’ve written in the last 25 years have begun that way, but often we do it for no other reason than to push away the outside...
