There’s a new American Girl Doll in town—and she produces electronic music. The beloved toy brand has released its “Girl of the Year” for 2023, a 12-year-old Indian girl named Kavi Sharma who enjoys songwriting and performing. In addition to the doll herself, you can purchase her vibrant performance outfit and a number of music-related items from her collection. The bedroom studio kit includes a microphone, drum pad, pair of drumsticks, headphones and a tiny synthesizer that plays six different tones. It also features a faux laptop with a screen displaying a DAW (digital audio workstation). Inclusivity is a key component of the American Girl brand, which has developed dolls with rich backstories and personalities for almost 40 years. The company produces dolls representing many...
Four women have just become the inaugural class of Lady of the House artists after the release of the label’s collaborative EP, Competition Winners. Handpicked from hundreds of demo submissions earlier this year, the winners will also receive mentorship from advisors at CAA, Beatport, The Media Nanny and more as well as a performance slot at LabelWorx’s Amsterdam Dance Week event on October 19th. Lady of the House is a U.K. organization that advocates for gender equity in dance music. They partnered with Becky Hill and Sam Divine, as well as BBC Radio hosts Jaguar and Charlie Tee, to select the songs for the EP. From the aptly titled house track “Bill’s Groove” by Angel Lee (with LKP) to the sweeping melodic house cut “Vivid” by EVALINA...
“The journey of an independent artist can often be a lonely one,” Music Production for Women (MPW) affirms on their website, “in which it is difficult to know exactly how to move forward to give your music the best chance of success.” That’s why the British organization is hosting a two-day summit, “Women in Music Tech” designed to train and empower the next wave of female and non-binary musicians. Scheduled for October 15-16 and free for all to attend, the event will livestream a variety of workshops, masterclasses and networking sessions to participants in more than 120 countries. “I’m hoping we can inspire any attendees who may have wanted to produce but felt intimidated by it, to take their first steps in the field,” ...
Candy Cult is a Web3 community with a cause. In music industry professions across the board, women and marginalized groups continue to be underrepresented. With the proliferation of NFT technology, Candy Cult’s cofounders, Brooke and Nick, identified an opportunity to help move the needle. Candy Cult is a collection of 6,666 digital collectibles, randomly generated using a library of over 100 unique characteristics. The animated avatars are fashionably ready for festival season and not totally unlike the fans you’d find in the desert of Coachella, or the urban park grounds of Lollapalooza. Candy Cult is an acknowledgement that few things are sweeter than festival season. Following the public sale, Candy Cult is committed to supporting charitable organizations focused on the emp...
Calls to diversify the music industry have become louder and louder in recent years, but it seems the majority of festival organizers continue to ignore them. Now, the organizers of a new electronic music festival in London have taken the biggest leap yet by planning a groundbreaking event they hope will move the needle in the right direction for representation. The ethos of the festival, dubbed Risen, revolves around celebrating the spiritual concept of the divine feminine. Not only is Risen led by women, but it will also feature a lineup consisting only of women, trans and non-binary artists. The lineup is loaded with talent and features over 90 artists, including Angel D’Lite, Hannah Holland, Heléna Star, Madam X and many more. In an interview with the Evening Standard, Kitt...

“May our voices unite and bring light, joy and happiness to this world of injustice and inequality. Smash the patriarchy,” said Dreadbox in a statement on the company’s newest analog polysynth, the Nymphes. Despite the boldly supportive statement, however, the company has drawn less than savory reactions from the public upon announcing the release of the synth. While the analog synth maker goes even further to instruct prospective users, those potential buyers aren’t quite happy with the way the company seems to be piggybacking off of a cause without actually supporting it in any way. “Each time you play a note on this synthesizer, imagine that you soothe their pain away and you will become a better human being and synth player,” reads the statement. “Hey...
Operating in a genre dominated by men, it’s two women who are propelling the engine of freeform electronic music from behind the scenes. Chloe Suit and Emily Mitchell helm Wakaan as its Marketing Director and Merchandise Director, respectively. Wakaan was launched in 2015 by famed bass music producer and entrepreneur Liquid Stranger, or Martin Stääf, who has since grown the organization into a powerhouse record label and music festival proprietor. And with two innovative, tough-as-nails women driving the brand, it has mutated from an unknown electronic neophyte into a global music and culture hub. Chloe Suit (L) and Emily Mitchell (R) of Wakaan. c/o Wakaan Sadly, Suit and Mitchell are outliers in their roles. A September 2019 survey conducted by the Association for Electronic Music (...
