AFCON 2021: Max Gradel’s strike seals 1-0 Ivory Coast win over Equatorial Guinea

Max Gradel scored a stunning goal as Ivory Coast grabbed a 1-0 victory over Equatorial Guinea in their AFCON 2021 match.  The former Bournemouth player put his side ahead inside the first five minutes of the game by firing a thunderous goal. That strike proved to be sufficient to deliver them a narrow victory at the Japoma Stadium. With Algeria and Sierra Leone playing out a goalless draw earlier this week, this win means that the Elephants are currently at the top of Group E.  Equatorial Guinea, after conceding an early goal, tried to get back in the game and managed to create several good scoring opportunities.  Basilio Ndong’s effort was saved before Sau Coco also squandered a few chances.  Juan Micha’s side tried with more intensity to score the equaliser after the ...

SL View: Spurs will strike gold if they can land £40m Everton target this summer

Could this be the year? It has to be this year.  Has there been any transfer window in recent memory where Wilfried Zaha didn’t want to leave Crystal Palace? How many times in the last few years have we seen clubs queuing up for Zaha, only to walk back after knowing his price tag? Zaha is the talisman figure for the Eagles, but maybe he has outgrown himself. He needs a fresh challenge, and Palace need a fresh direction as well. Two summers ago, he was valued at around £100m, but now he could be available at a reasonable £40m. According to reports from The Times, Zaha has told Crystal Palace he wants to leave. He wants to quit Selhurst Park in the summer and preferably wants a move away before the Eagles return for pre-season training next month. According to a recent re...

Why Wilfried Zaha is no longer taking the knee

Wilfried Zaha became the first Premier League player not to kneel before kick-off on Saturday since top-flight footballers started using the gesture to protest racial injustice last summer. The Crystal Palace winger instead chose to “stand tall” ahead of the match with West Brom, something he had said in February he was going to do but hadn’t started a game since then due to injury. Zaha released a statement ahead of kick-off outlining his intention to do so and his reasons for it. What he said “My decision to stand at kick-off has been public knowledge for a couple of weeks now,” the Ivorian international said. “There is no right or wrong decision, but for me personally I feel kneeling has just become a part of the pre-match routine and at the moment it doesn’t matter whether we kneel or ...

Leicester edge up to second despite draw vs Crystal Palace

A much-changed Leicester moved up to second in the Premier League thanks to Harvey Barnes’ late equaliser in a 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace on Monday. Wilfried Zaha’s stunning near post volley put the Eagles in front against the run of play after Kelechi Iheanacho had a first-half penalty saved for Leicester. With little over 48 hours rest between the Foxes’ 2-2 draw with Manchester United on Saturday and the trip to Selhurst Park, Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers made seven changes with Jamie Vardy and Youri Tielemans among those left on the bench. Both were introduced midway through the second-half and Leicester’s pressure was rewarded with an equaliser when Barnes fired in a low shot from the edge of the box for his eighth goal of the season. Despite the upheaval of missing many of their st...

Roy Hodgson ‘really pleased’ as Crystal Palace hit 5 goals in West Brom rout

Wilfred Zaha was outstanding for Crystal Palace as they took advantage of the controversial dismissal of Matheus Pereira to claim their first points in three games with a rout at West Brom. Zaha had missed Palace’s previous two matches – both of which ended in defeat – after testing positive for Covid-19 but quickly found his feet again at The Hawthorns with a typically lively attacking display that included two goals and an assist. It was from his low cross that Darnell Furlong diverted the ball into his own net to give the visitors the lead and his whipped finish into the far corner that restored the advantage after Conor Gallagher’s low, driven equaliser. Between these two Zaha contributions, though, came the incident that completely altered the complexion of the game – Pereira’s red ca...

Premier League star tests positive for coronavirus

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson has revealed that Ivory Coast forward Wilfried Zaha is self-isolating after testing positive for Covid-19. Zaha was missing from the Palace squad for their Premier League match at Burnley on Monday as a result of the illness. “He has tested positive unfortunately for coronavirus so is self-isolating, and is awaiting the results of the next test,” Hodgson said. “He is not feeling particularly ill, but unfortunately the test proved positive and he is following the procedures.” Zaha’s absence is a blow to Palace after his fine start to the season. The 28-year-old has scored five goals and provided two assists for Hodgson’s team. He was due to make his 200th Premier League appearance in the Burnley match, but will be sidelined for the length of his quarantine...

Andros Townsend comments on Crystal Palace teammate Wilfried Zaha

Andros Townsend said on talkSPORT (10am, October 27, 2020) that Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha will get his move at the end of the season if he plays well. The former Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United winger spoke highly of his Palace teammate. Townsend believes that if the Ivory Coast international scores 15 to 20 goals for Palace this season, then he will get a move to a bigger club. The Englishman said about Zaha on talkSPORT (10am, October 27, 2020): “I think Wilf and the manager have made no secret that Wilf wanted to move this window. It’s not like he doesn’t like Crystal Palace or he has fallen out of love. He just believes that he was destined for bigger things, which I agree with. “But when the transfer doesn’t happen, for whatever reason, he now obviously still loves Cr...

‘He’d be a great signing: Many Everton fans urge Ancelotti to sign ‘top player’ from PL rivals

Manchester United lost their opening game of the 2020-21 Premier League campaign with a 3-1 defeat on Saturday against Crystal Palace at Old Trafford. Two goals from former United player Wilfried Zaha and one from Andros Townsend sealed all three points for the Eagles. Many Everton fans have been left impressed with Zaha’s performance, and have urged the club to sign the Ivory Coast international. Zaha has expressed his desire to move elsewhere and challenge himself at a bigger club. However, Crystal Palace are yet to receive a substantial offer for the 27-year-old winger. Everton fans feel that Zaha is a ‘top player’, and he would be a ‘great signing’ for the club. Here are some of the selected tweets: Zaha isn’t my first choice for another attacker in this window however for a reasonable...

Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha explains Jordan Ayew penalty swap against Manchester United

Crystal Palace attacker Wilfried Zaha has englightened the public on the incident leading to replacing Ghana striker Jordan Ayew in retaking a missed penalty during Saturday’s Premier League triumph over Manchester United. The Eagles have made it two away wins over Manchester United in a row as they registered a 3-1 triumph at Old Trafford, and taking three points for the second straight time in this term. With Palace 1-0 up, Ayew won a penalty for his side and elected himself to take the resultant kick which was saved by goalkeeper David de Gea. Palace were, however, spared by a video assistant referee (VAR) decision which ordered for a retake of the kick, judging De Gea to have moved off his line before the kick was taken. Surprisingly, Ayew did not step up for the retake, which was this...

Report: Crystal Palace attacker attracting interest from three European clubs

Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund are among the clubs keen on signing Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha this summer, a report from Sky Sports claims. The Ivory Coast international was fancied to pursue a fresh challenge last summer when he was the subject of interest from Arsenal and Everton. However, both teams were put off by the Eagles’ £80m price tag and Zaha ultimately spent the entire 2019/2020 campaign with the south London side. The 27-year-old experienced an average season with just four goals and five assists from 38 league outings, but he still appears to be attracting high-profile interest. According to Sky Sports, Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund are considering a move for Zaha amid the uncertain futures of Neymar and Jadon Sancho respectively. AS Monac...
