With the 2021 Grammy nominations coming today (Nov. 24), Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy told Seth Myers his humbling — if hysterical — story from a previous Grammy night. The Wilco singer revealed that P. Diddy thought he was an usher and asked the Wilco frontman for a program of the night’s events. “I was with a big group of people; all the Wilco guys, wives and girlfriends. Somehow I ended up standing outside one of the bathrooms at the Staples Center, holding everyone’s Grammy program,” Tweedy said on the Nov. 23 edition of Late Night with Seth Meyers. “And P. Diddy walked up to me, and he thought I was an usher handing out programs. He taps the programs I was holding with a cane and said, ‘give me one of those.’” His retort? ‘No, they’re mine. It didn’t escalate, thank goodness,” Tweed...
This month’s edition of the Reissue Section bounces all around the globe: from Athens, Ga. to Wales, from Berlin to Sacramento (and back to Athens again). Seriously, this COVID year continues to yield some of the best archival titles since they first started telling us that CDs were a dead scene. As if… Pylon – Pylon Box (New West Records) / Young Marble Giants – Colossal Youth (Domino) If we’ve learned anything from the recent barrage of TV show revivals, anniversary stories and video game nostalgia, we know the early 80s brought a major cultural sea change — especially on modern rock radio, as punk took on bolder forms against the backdrop of New Wave. Pylon (of Athens, Ga.) and Young Marble Giants (of Cardiff, Wales) were way ahead of their time at that pivotal p...

Wilco singer/songwriter Jeff Tweedy will release How to Write One Song, billed as a “candid and fascinating primer on the art form he knows best,” on Oct. 13 on Dutton. The new book, which follows up his 2019 memoir, Let’s Go (So We Can Get Back), promises to reveal the “the behind-the-scenes process, and the joy he gets from making something new.” Tweedy explains the tome’s raison d’etre: “The feeling I get when I write—the sense that time is simultaneously expanding and disappearing—that I’m simultaneously more me and also free of me—is the main reason I wanted to put my thoughts on songwriting down in book form to share with everyone so inclined.” How to Write One Song contains actionable and practical songwriting tips, including tips on overcoming se...
On June 18, Jeff Tweedy announced that he would start donating 5% of his writer royalties to racial justice organizations and urged other artists to do the same. And in a new interview, Tweedy explains not only its importance but also how this promise can turn into an industry-wide mission. “It’s not an exaggeration to say our culture wouldn’t be our culture without black genius,” the Wilco singer told Rolling Stone. “There’s a shameful history there, and there are things the industry should still be ashamed of. There are things about the way Black artists are treated today that are different and unfair. It isn’t an equal playing field.” He plans to start pushing for these donations with BMI, which currently allows artists to do this on a “one-off basis” but are looking into a sustainable ...
