The indie sleaze era had it all. Sky Ferreira hanging out with Taylor Swift at Katy Perry’s birthday party. A maximalist approach to fashion (no one would bat an eye at pairing shutter shades with a bikini top indoors). Skins parties that recreated the debauchery from the hit British series. Fan-run Tumblr accounts dedicated to the relationship of Alexa Chung and Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner. Wild nights out captured with cameras instead of phones — with flash photography a must. It’s been a decade since this cultural phenomenon ended, but it’s left an enormous footprint on music and fashion. The initial spark came shortly after 9/11, with bands like the Strokes and Interpol releasing their debut albums. It wasn’t until the mid-2000s that indie sleaze became a widespread craze — rea...
Weezer’s planned Broadway residency, which was to constitute Sept. 13-18 shows at the Broadway Theatre, has been canceled “due to low ticket sales and unbelievably high expenses,” according to a Discord post from frontman Rivers Cuomo. In spite of the announcement, tickets remain on sale for all five shows; SPIN has requested further comment from Weezer’s publicist and management. During SZNZ: In Residence On Broadway, Weezer was planning to play each of its four SZNZ EPs in their entirety, with a fifth date added for an “encore.” Each night was also supposed to feature “a unique set of Weezer classics.” “I’m very sorry to be telling you this now after we’ve already invested so much time, thought and emotion,” Cuomo said. “Extra apologies to those of you who cleared schedules and made trav...
It’s the summer solstice, and you know what that means: Weezer dropped the Summer installment of their SZNS EP project today. In addition to new music, the band also announced SZNZ: In Residence On Broadway, which is exactly what it sounds like — a four-night Broadway residency in which Weezer will play each of its SZNZ EPs in its entirety, with a fifth date added for an “encore.” On top of playing the SZNZ EPs, each night will also feature “a unique set of Weezer classics.” The residency will be held at the Broadway Theatre Sept. 13-18, which is before the Autumn and Winter EPs are scheduled to come out. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. EST on June 24. Get more ticket info here. Weezer is currently on the European leg of their Hella Mega Tour with Green Day and Fall Out B...
Weezer is presenting one of their most exciting projects to date, SZNZ, a four-EP-long cycle through the seasons. At the start of each season in 2022, a corresponding EP will be released via Crush Music/Atlantic Records. [embedded content][embedded content] Weezer debuted “A Little Bit Of Love,” the first single for the SZNZ Spring volume, which is a light and fresh song that builds anticipation for the rest of the project. SZNZ: Spring was produced by Jake Sinclair, Ethan Gruska, and Suzy Shinn will be released in its entirety on March 20, the spring equinox. Weezer is set to debut “A Little Bit Of Love” on March 21st as their first installment of a seasonal residency with Jimmy Kimmel Live! The band is also the first to do a residency on the late-night show. Each SZNZ release will ...
Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo has crafted a new streaming platform as a home for thousands of the iconic alternative rock band’s demos, cleverly named “Weezify.” The demos range from Cuomo’s early solo work from decades ago to Weezer demos as recent as 2017’s Pacific Daydream. In all the recent controversy surrounding Spotify, maybe it’s time for a new platform to take over. Cuomo certainly seems to think so. Yesterday morning he tweeted, “Tired of Spotify? Come on over to Weezify” along with the link to the platform. The app store description describes the platform as “a Spotify-like player for all of Rivers Cuomo’s demos (1975 – 2017).” It details that the platform holds close to 3,500 demos. Within it, users can create, share and follow playlists. “I made this app myself,” Cuomo sa...
Green Day released a banging compilation video of them performing “Rock and Roll All Nite” night after night during the U.S. leg of their Hella Mega Tour. The KISS cover became a live staple for the punk trio, who will resume the tour with Weezer and Fall Out Boy, in Europe and the U.K. [embedded content] The video shows head-boppin’ fans and funny backstage shenanigans as everyone rocks out to the iconic rock anthem. Old people crowd surf, Billie Joe Armstrong looks like a bug on his back on top of a piano, and the huge mob of heads in the stadium makes for a light-hearted, forgetful-of-the-pandemic time. The alt-rock giants finished off the U.S. portion of the tour in Seattle on September 6. Hella Mega will take over Europe beginning in June 2022 with its first show in Vienna. Fans can p...
Suzy Shinn had been working with Weezer as an assistant engineer for more than six years, though she never expected to get called into the big chair. However, the L.A.-based producer’s impressive resume had more than prepared her for that undertaking. At 26, the engineer can boast credits from the likes of Fall Out Boy and Katy Perry to Dua Lipa and Panic! at the Disco. But working with Weezer? That was an all-time career high. “I was so terrified the first day [of working with Weezer],” Shinn recalls over the phone from her home in Los Feliz. “Rivers is a creative and an artist, and it’s hard to be an artist in front of people that you don’t know — and especially vulnerable and intimate when it comes to lyrics and melodies.” While Weezer had previously opted to work with well-known ...
After multiple setbacks and schedule changes, Green Day, Fall Out Boy and Weezer’s ballyhooed Hella Mega Tour is finally happening. On Monday morning (May 17), the trio announced the rescheduled dates for the stadium tour, which kicks off July 24 in Dallas and now includes new stops in Columbus, Ohio at Crew Stadium and at Milwaukee’s Summerfest. The run of dates ends Sept. 6 in Seattle. If that’s not enough action for one day, Green Day also shared a new song titled “Pollyanna,” which you can hear below. [embedded content] The tour was originally announced in 2019 (which may as well be 2009 at this point) and due to COVID, the tour was pushed several times. Check out the rescheduled tour dates below. In a 2019 interview, Weezer ringleader Rivers Cuomo spoke about their most recent self-titled album at the time, Weezer (a.k.a. the Black Album). “My main goal for any album at this point is for it to have at least one song that the audience at our shows every night wants to hear,” Cuomo said. He was uncertain that the Black Album would fulfill that goal, but that Weezer “would fail in a different way, which is exciting to me.” Cuomo goes on to describe himself as a resilient songwriter, and he’s right. He recognizes that fans likely won’t enjoy a new Weezer album nearly as much as 1994’s studio debut Weezer (or the Blue Album) or their second album, 1996’s Pinkerton, but that doesn’t preclude Cuomo’s lofty ambitions that Weezer will one day perform at a Super Bowl halftime show. That coul...
Ahead of the release of his bb u ok? (album2), San Holo has shared the star-studded tracklist for his hotly anticipated sophomore album. Fans will be glad to hear that the record will feature a whopping 20 songs. San Holo collaborated with a number of electronic heavy-hitters this time around, such as Mr. Carmack and Mija, who are featured on the the closing track “One More Day.” The album will also feature frequent creative collaborator Bipolar Sunshine on two tracks, “New One” and the previously released single “Find Your Way.” The most high-profile feature on bb u ok?
