Here’s a Bone-Chilling Psytrance Remix of the “Wednesday” Theme Song

Spooky, kooky and groovy—there’s a new remix of the theme song from Netflix’s runaway hit Wednesday for all fans of the macabre. It’s only fitting that the ethos of the iconic goth family—who are anything but average—receives a whimsical remix, and Flawx has delivered in spades. Thrashing along at a brisk 150 BPM, his psytrance-inspired take on the Wednesday theme doubles as a heart-pumping adrenaline rush to animate the most diehard fans of hard dance music. Many have likened the spine-tingling series’ theme to a compositional mashup of The Rolling Stones’ “Paint It Black” and the original theme music from The Addams Family. Flawx expertly intertwines the entangled melodies into the fabric of a high-energy electronic music framework with...

Netflix Renews Wednesday for Season 2

Wednesday Addams doesn’t bury hatchets, she sharpens them, and she’ll be back sharper than ever now that Netflix has officially renewed Wednesday for Season 2. The news is hardly a surprise; Wednesday is one of Netflix’s biggest hits ever, even breaking some viewership records set by Stranger Things. Season 1 of the Tim Burton-produced, Jenna Ortega-starring series inspired viral dances and unblinking stares, and according to co-showrunners Miles Millar and Alfred Gough, they’re just getting started. “It’s been incredible to create a show that has connected with people across the world,” they told Tudum. “Thrilled to continue Wednesday’s tortuous journey into Season 2. We can’t wait to dive head first into another season and explore the kooky spooky world of N...

Danny Elfman ‘Surprised’ by ‘Wednesday’ Success, Thought It Was Going to Be ‘A Little Cult Thing’

Wednesday is officially a smash. The Netflix show, which premiered Nov. 23, has climbed the ranks since its release and has become the third most watched show on the streaming platform after Stranger Things and Squid Game, but for the show’s composer Danny Elfman, the success came as a major surprise. Speaking alongside Phoebe Bridgers for an interview with NME published Friday (Dec. 16), the composer — well known and loved for his work on The Nightmare Before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands, Alice in Wonderland and more — spoke about what it was like working on Wednesday and how he feels about the show resonating with the masses. “Wednesday was just fun. I grew up on The Addams Family, but I really also dug the Charles Addams cartoons even more so, so for me, it was like a well known kind ...

Who Is the Monster on Netflix’s Wednesday?

[Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers for Season 1 of Wednesday.] Like many coming-of-age TV shows, Netflix’s latest hit series Wednesday uses a murder mystery as a central thread for its plot. Shortly after Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega) is expelled from her high school and transferred to Nevermore Academy in the backwoods of Vermont, the aloof teenager discovers there has been a monster picking off her fellow outcasts one by one. Once she learns of a premonition in which she appears to destroy the school, Wednesday resolves to get to the bottom of the mystery by using her psychic abilities passed down through generations. While still learning to interpret her own visions, the eldest Addams Family sibling manages to alienate almost everyone around her while also putti...

The Nevermore Academy Orchestra Rules the Wednesday Soundtrack: Stream

Based on that iconic dance scene, the Nevermore Academy is the place to be for Wednesday’s goth fans, so it makes sense that the fictional school’s orchestra is credited with the Netflix series’ soundtrack. The Wednesday soundtrack begins with a string performance of The Rolling Stones’ “Paint It Black,” courtesy of Miss Addams herself. From there, the Nevermore Academy Orchestra takes us through the chorus of Fleetwood Mac’s “Don’t Stop” before turning to some classical favorites: Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons – Winter: I. Allegro Non Molto” and Elgar’s “Concerto in E Minor for Violoncello and Orchestra.” Wednesday has been a runaway hit since premiering on Netflix earlier this month — it even broke Stranger Things’ viewership record. Tim Burton’s take on the Addams Fam...

Wednesday Breaks Netflix Viewership Record Set by Stranger Things

Pigtail braids might become the season’s hottest hairstyle, because Wednesday just broke a Netflix viewership record set by Stranger Things Season 4. Per TV Line, the Tim Burton-helmed series — which stars a brilliantly-cast Jenna Ortega as the titular Addams daughter — racked up 341.23 million hours viewed since its November 23rd debut, besting the previous record for the most hours viewed in a week for an English-language TV series on Netflix. Stranger Things 4 amassed 335.01 million hours viewed for the week of May 30th to June 5th earlier this year. Coming in second place for most hours viewed on Netflix last week was 1899 (with nearly 88 million hours viewed), followed by The Crown Season 5 (42.4 million hours viewed), Dead to Me Season 5 (33.3 million hours viewed) and Mani...

How Siouxsie and the Banshees Inspired Jenna Ortega’s Goth Dance in Wednesday

Thanks to a delightfully aloof performance from Jenna Ortega, Netflix’s updated Addams Family adaptation Wednesday has been a runaway hit. In one unforgettable scene, Ortega’s Wednesday Addams lets her guard down for a bit and breaks out a series of impressive moves at the Nevermore Academy’s Rave’N dance. On Twitter, Ortega revealed the inspirations for her dance moves, citing “Siouxsie Sioux, Bob Fosse’s Rich Man’s Frug, Lisa Loring, Lene Lovich, Denis Lavant, and archival footage of goths dancing in clubs in the ’80s.” Sioux was the lead singer for Siouxsie and the Banshees, a British rock band that was a pivotal part of the goth-rock scene alongside groups such as The Cure, Joy Division, and Bauhaus. Meanwhile, Fosse choreographed a dance craze called The Rich Man’s Frug in the mu...

Difficult Fun: September 2021’s Best Punk

Welcome to the latest edition of Difficult Fun! Each month, SPIN will spotlight the best punk on the planet and discuss it here, with the ambition of challenging preconceived notions of what the four-letter word actually means and, ideally, entertaining readers in the process. Purists, piss off! Everyone else, enjoy. This should be a space for Turnstile worship. Seriously. (Read that here, written by the ineffable Zoe Camp three years ago. SPIN was early to the melodic hardcore band’s greatness.) This month’s column should open with a commendatory review of their latest album, Glow On, and a thoughtful meditation on how some positive punks found funk and dance rhythms in their breakdowns and saved a genre in repose. Those arguments exist elsewhere. If anything, I’m mostly excited that Turn...

White House does not rule out Haiti request for U.S. troops

The United States is still reviewing a request for troops made by Haiti’s interim Prime Minister Claude Joseph to help secure key infrastructure after the assassination of President Jovenel Moise, White House spokesperson Jen Psaki said on Monday. Psaki said Haiti’s political leadership remains unclear and that it was vital for the country’s leaders to come together to chart a united path forward. Moise was shot dead early on Wednesday at his Port-au-Prince home by what Haitian authorities describe as a unit of assassins formed of 26 Colombians and two Haitian Americans. Haitian police said on Sunday they had arrested another key suspect. The death of the president has plunged the troubled country into deeper turmoil, and U.S. officials traveled there on Sunday to assess the situation and ...
